THE SQUASH BLOSSOM

Squash Blossom Jewelry

One of the most recognizable artifacts of the Native American Culture. Traditionally associated with the Navajo silversmiths, rather it is a fascinating consolidation of influences traced historically back hundreds of years.
The classic squash blossom necklace features a crescent shaped pendant, called "Naja" (Nah-Hah), the Navajo word for "crescent." A symbol that was common to many of the earliest civilizations. In the late 1500s and early 1600s, the saddles and bridles of huge muscled horses of the Spanish Conquistadors where fitted with sterling silver crescent-shaped pendants of Moorish origin.
For the next 200 years, as the two cultures cycled through various phases of peace and conflict in the struggle for power, the Navajo adopted and incorporated these and other traditional Spanish ornaments into their jewelry.
Early on, the Navajo wore the Nah-Hah as an ornament of beauty and these pieces also came to symbolize wealth. Eventually became associated with crop fertility and worn during ceremonies related to the agricultural cycles. It was customary for Medicine men to wear them as well.

SKI WEAR

SKI WEAR

I was lucky enough to grow up skiing in Colorado on vacations, in college and eventually living in Vail.  By far my favorite ski store is  Gorsurch.  They have a great selection of premiere sports wear, equipment and home goods.

For a larger more moderately priced selection of clothing and equipment I like Christy Sports.

These two sites will outfit you and your families for the best snow!

KACHINA, MY STYLIN' FUR BABY

KACHINA

Around two and a half years ago I adopted a beautiful pit bull mix.  Since she was my little Indian, found in Phoenix, I named her Kachina.  I purchased her collar, leash and ID tag at:

They have a great variety of Bling and Southwest Styles for our doggies and kittens.  Kachina is wearing a white leather collar with turquoise.

KACHINA DOLL

Hopi Kachina Dolls are effigies made of cottonwood that embody the characteristics of the ceremonial Kachina, the masked spirits of the HopiNative American tribe. According to the Hopi, Kachina dolls are objects meant to be treasured and studied, and are not to be considered idols of worship or children’s toys.
